Ballet Slippers and Breast Cancer

Forgive me for posting twice in such a short amount of time.

This morning, I received some news with regard to the health of Mary Catherine's ballet teacher, Miss Amanda.

Amanda has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  Only in her mid-twenties...with no family history of cancer...and a dancer in good health her entire life (healthy body weight...exercise...nutrition)...this diagnosis is indeed shocking.

The cancer was detected early...and prognosis for a full recovery is good.

Amanda asked that we share this information with our daughters so that they would not hear word of this at the studio...becoming confused and/or frightened.

I sat down with all three children at breakfast this morning.  After grace and a hot breakfast of oatmeal chocolate chip waffles (thank you, Eggo!) and sausage links, I gently shared the news of Miss Amanda's diagnosis.

Children are fascinating and their developmental stages speak oodles to their comprehension and understanding of such difficult news to hear.  My three-year old is oblivious...my 6-year old (boy) fascinated with all the medical procedures (how does chemotherapy work?...what are "cells"?...how does radiation burn you...like a sunburn?)...and my 9-year old is ready to create get-well cards...prayer groups...and drive to her house to give her a hug.  (We're giving Miss Amanda some space!)  :)

Anyway, as adults we understand the depth of fear that comes with this diagnosis, but as parents we know it is our job to fill our children with hope and faith in God and his miracles through medical science.  We also know that although we don't always understand God's ways, He uses all things for good.

Would you please join me in adding Miss Amanda to your prayer list.  Mary Catherine and I would be ever so grateful.

We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

  4. Most certainly. You know, tears weld up in my eyes when you mentioned your kids' reactions. Their innocence, the innocence of all children, I wish our entire society could be that way.
