The Ferris Wheel Ride of Life

I see nothing in space as promising as the view from a Ferris wheel.”  E.B. White, American Writer (1899-1985)

Life can be like a Ferris wheel ride.

The ride starts our slow enough, with passengers hopping on and off and great anticipation building for “the real” ride.

The wheel begins to turn faster and faster all while ferrying passengers to dizzying heights and stomach-dropping lows.  Similar to the ups and downs sprinkled throughout life.

Sometimes, you are even “stuck” up at the top for a bit.  Do you take in the view or are you trembling with fear at the challenges that lay before you?

And then, as quickly as it begins, it ends.  Passengers make their slow descent toward the bottom and are ushered off towards the exit.  Sometimes we are not ready to go, but our turn is over…God is calling us home.

(These pictures are of Mary’s first Ferris wheel ride with daddy at the Old Settler’s Day carnival in September.  Because she is so little, she couldn’t see over the sides of the car which disappointed her greatly!)

  1. Hope everything is ok....I am always here for you. Boy, do I relate to life being like a ferris wheel ride. I feel like we are stuck up at the top, not moving, just waiting for the ride to continue but not ready for the ride to end.

  6. Thought provoking analogies. As for the real side of it, I am terrified of ferris wheels! I like my feet firmly planted on the ground. Ha!

  7. I haven't been on a ferris wheel in years, but I remember the feeling of being stuck at the top! I hope Mary gets another opportunity soon to ride again when she can see over the side!

  8. I hate ferris wheels (or Paris wheels as we call them). It´s the only thing I refuse to take a ride in at any amusement park :-)
    Have a great day now!

  9. The comparison between a ferris wheel and life had me thinking about your daughter being upset that she couldn't see out. It's sort of like a child being upset that they can't do everything a grown up does. When you're little all you want to do is be bigger. Once you reach "bigger" you wish you could be little again.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to go back and do childhood over again now that we know just how great it really was....lol

  13. With Ferris Wheels, it seems like most of the time is spent waiting. Waiting for the ride to start, and waiting for it to end. You're right- that is quite a bit like life, huh? Always waiting for something. It's important to enjoy the ride for all it is.

  14. Ferris wheels have always frightened me. I don't know what it is...maybe the height?

But the analogies you made between the ride and life was wonderful!
