The Awkward Selfie

Selfies are awkward, no?!

I suppose it's more awkward for my generation than others….

…after all, my 40+ crowd didn't grow up with phones with cameras…

…or phones at all, for that matter!

Still, regardless of whether or not the technology would have existed when I was a teen,

I doubt that I would have been an avid selfie-taker.

For me, there's something so self-absorbing about constantly photographing oneself.

I mean…

…can you imagine the Disciples taking selfies…

…or Martha and Mary….fighting over who got to take a selfie with Jesus?

It's so ridiculous when you think of it in terms of Christ!

I much prefer to take pictures of others…

…my husband, children, parents…

…even being in a picture or two with them.

Because for me, the camera is always about capturing myself in relation to others…

…being in relationship with others

not constantly with myself.

And so this Lent, I plan to really work on my relationships with others…

….writing more love notes…

…making more phone calls…

…playing more board games…sharing more read-alouds…cooking more meals together.

And of course, spending more time with Christ.

Wishing you a fun Fat Tuesday and a blessed start to Lent,

Transformation Update…

  2. I was "taught" the art of the selfie by my teenager!
And believe me...it is an art!
You did awesome...and you look great!
Your smile always makes me happy, my friend! : )
And you should see the looks on my kids' faces when I try to explain to them that I used to share a phone with my sisters. It was in the kitchen. Attached to the wall. : )

As for the post itself, I LOVE it! I don't do selfies either. I can relate to you with what you wrote. (On the same page, as my husband would say :)

  7. Great post. I doubt if I will ever be a selfie fan. The only selfie I kept was one of Goofy and me at DisneyWorld. That was too fun. But a selfie of just me...not so much.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Your kind words are appreciated! As Mother Teresa said, "Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love."
