A Whole New World

I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?

Mary as Princess Jasmine in Saturday night's ballet recital.
 I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride

 A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming

A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you

This past Saturday night (Mother's Day eve!) we spent as a family watching our oldest perform in her company's Spring Ballet Recital, The Magic Kingdom.

It truly was a magical night watching my daughter, who made me a mother for the first time, perform on stage as one of 5 "Jasmines" in a ballet rendition of "A Whole New World".  She did a fantastic job and it was such a joy to watch her perform with the other members of the Junior Company.

And as I listened to the lyrics of the song, I thought of them in terms of a mother and her child/children rather than between lovers...

 A whole new world
Don't you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath - it gets better
I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be

Isn't that the truth...

...that once you've given birth or adopted a child, you can't ever go back to where you used to be?

And I would never want to!

Although I thought that the first 11-years of our marriage were terrific, (sleeping in, taking "luxurious" vacations, spending money on whatever we wanted), they pale in comparison to family life that now includes three children.

Don't get me wrong...we have our stressors, our less than Christ-like moments with each other as a couple and as parents, but life with children is like Aladdin says,

 A whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

A whole new world
That's where we'll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

Perhaps this week, you and your little ones can approach life like Aladdin...living in the moment and taking it all in with every turn a surprise!
I hope that you had a wonderful weekend and wishing you a great start to the work week!

  2. Awww, my oldest danced to that same song a couple of years ago, and it was very magical :) You're right, it's so very much like parenthood and childhood. One of my most favorite things about being a mama is being able to experience all of the wonders again with my children. They make you see things differently, don't they?

  3. If we let God, he will make each day come alive with new gifts. The problems often is that we don't look. Right now I am so caught up in my own pain that I am missing so much around me. Thank you for the beautiful reminder. Your precious performer is beautiful!

  4. Hi Valerie,

Your daughter looks beautiful! So serious in the first picture and happy in the rest. I'm gathering she was "getting into character" in the first shot! Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Your kind words are appreciated! As Mother Teresa said, "Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love."
